The importance of catching teeth and jaw problems early!
At the start of your child losing their first tooth, their teeth and jaw will begin to go through many changes. As they lose teeth and new teeth come in, problems can develop that only an orthodontist can detect. So, we know how important it is to monitor these changes in their early years.
Our Complimentary Orthodontic Bright Beaming Smiles (COBBS) Kids Program consists of regular complimentary visits for our young patients. Our COBBS Kids Program is the beginning of a healthy, beautiful, and lifelong smile.
Who Can Participate?
This program is for anyone ages 7-12 who is transitioning from baby teeth to adult teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child see an orthodontist by age 7. Seeing a child by age 7 gives us the best chance of catching problems early. Not to mention, this will also help prevent issues that may have a negative impact on a growing face and smile.
Reasons to Enroll Your Child Early
When your child starts losing their first teeth, their teeth and jaw will go through many changes. For this reason, we know how important it is to monitor these changes.
Your child’s teeth may appear to be straight. However, as they lose teeth and new teeth come in, problems can develop that only an orthodontist can detect.
We encourage you to enroll your child in the program because the sooner any problems are detected, the easier they are to correct.
For instance, sometimes, a baby tooth will not fall out. The permanent tooth will still develop and could grow out in front of or behind the baby tooth or even at an angle.
If this occurs, the other teeth can be pushed out of the way and become crooked.
Another issue early visits detect is proper jaw growth and development.
If your child’s jaw is not growing fast enough, yet molars and permanent teeth are developing more quickly, it could result in overcrowding of the teeth. In addition, the bite of their jaw is checked to see if your child could develop an overbite or under-bite.
What Problems are Best Caught Early?
- Missing teeth
- Extra teeth
- Impacted teeth
- Cross-bites
- Finger or thumb habits
- Skeletal growth problems
- Unusual tooth eruption patterns
- Facial asymmetry (lacking symmetry)
We all want what is best for your child, and these problems can be much more difficult to correct later in life, so don’t wait!
Education for Parents
Another huge benefit is that the COBBS Kids Program provides education and resources for parents. Also, parents get any questions answered about “normal” growth patterns and dental changes regarding their child.
Our young patients who participate in the COBBS Kids Program become comfortable with our office and have a relationship with us long before they may need braces or other treatment.
The parents of our COBBS Kids Program patients can feel confident that specialists are monitoring their child’s facial and dental development.
Why an Orthodontist if My Child is Already Seeing a Dentist?
Parents often ask why their child needs to see an orthodontist if they already see a dentist. Dentists look at the health of the teeth individually. Orthodontists look at the pattern of transition of all the teeth.
Equally important, we monitor the development of the jaw and the growth of the face. An orthodontic specialist monitoring your child’s growth allows for minimal intervention when needed. Early detection can save thousands of dollars and unnecessary time in braces and prevent uncomfortable procedures in the future.
